Let's Talk Art

Malaysian artist Okui Lala brings Brisbane's multicultural voice to life through the eyes and ears of our city's youngest residents.

The Sounds of Brisbane

Ever wondered what Brisbane sounds like to our city's next generation? Heritage Lanes' latest Outdoor Gallery installation captures the musical heartbeat of Brisbane through an extraordinary collaboration between international artist Okui Lala and West End State School's multilingual students.

The Artist

Malaysian artist Okui Lala is known for exploring the fascinating world of language and translation through video art. Her work delves into what happens when words cross cultural boundaries – what's gained, what's lost, and what magical new meanings emerge.

The Artwork

"The Sounds of Brisbane" (2024) isn't your typical art installation. Created as part of Asia Pacific Triennial Kids, this multimedia piece transforms Heritage Lanes' light boxes into windows of cultural expression. The installation features striking images from a music video where bilingual and multilingual students perform their original song about Brisbane – a piece born from their unique perspective on our city's soundscape.

The Story

In a special workshop, West End State School students were asked a seemingly simple question: "What does Brisbane sound like to you?" Their answers, filtered through multiple languages and cultural lenses, became the foundation for a song that captures Brisbane's essence in ways you might never have imagined.
